One of the best walks in the metro area, Dikmen Valley is more of a canyon with a park at the bottom. Families come here to stroll, bring their kids to the playgrounds (look for the pirate ship!), and enjoy an afternoon tea or ice cream. The park is beautifully landscaped and a pleasant escape from the usually gray scenery of Ankara. Walking trails stretch all the way through the valley, so bring your walking shoes and a snack.

Hamamonu is easy to miss, nestled as it is between rough slums and modern shopping areas, but step into these few blocks and you\'ll find yourself in a charming Classical Ottoman village! No cars are allowed on the streets, adding to the feeling of walking into history, surrounded by Ottoman mansions and window displays of flowers. Don\'t miss the \"Art Street\" full of galleries and artisans practicing traditional styles. The cafes, with their traditional decor and student-friendly prices, are a charming stop after some window shopping. Be sure to stop in the old hans full of local village women selling handmade textiles, cheeses, and snacks!

It only takes about 20 minutes of walking around Ankara to realize the love and respect Turks have for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. His image can be seen on t-shirts, flags, shop walls, and you may even spot people with his signature tattooed on an arm. And so it is hardly surprising that Atatürk\'s mausoleum is one of the most significant sights in Ankara. The structure of the mausoleum is impressive enough, visible from more parts of town than you\'d imagine possible, but the most interesting part is the biographical museum, which contains artifacts from Atatürk\'s life and a history of the War of Turkish Independence. This is an essential stop for visitors to get a feel for Turkey as it exists now.

Locals will tell you with derision that Kocatepe Mosque is modern and unoriginal, but don\\\'t let that stop you from visiting. With a capacity for 24,000 worshipers, Kocatepe is the largest mosque in Turkey and casts a staggeringly impressive silhouette onto the Ankara skyline. It was completed in 1987 and features an eclectic neo-Ottoman style, drawing influences from several of the prominent historical mosques in Istanbul. For believers and non-believers alike, the spell of reverence in the giant space cast by the painted walls, stained glass windows, and 1 ton solid gold chandelier is a captivating experience. Entry is free and the mosque is open to all. Plan to take off your shoes upon entry. Women, bring a scarf to cover your head as a gesture of respect, just as with any mosque in Turkey.

The center of Ankara, a transportation hub, the center of political protests, and one of the busiest corners in the city. If you want to people watch, this is the spot! Güvenpark isn\'t much of a park, spanning only one city block and surrounded by heavy traffic, but it is a central gathering place. The large sculpture at the end of the park was built in 1935 as a tribute to the police and gendarmes who served in the War of Independence. \r\n\r\nWalk around the edge of the park to find a snack of simit, fresh fruit juice, grilled corn, or other delicious tidbits.\r\n\r\nFrom here you can catch a bus, the metro, or a mini-bus (dolmuş) to anywhere in town.

Istanbul may hold the heart of traditional Turkey, but Ankara embraces the modern side, and there is no better place to experience what modern Turkey is all about than Tunali Hilmi Caddesi, a bustling shopping and dining district in central Ankara. Tunali Hilmi is known for its pasaj, or indoor shopping area, but the streets are always full of activity, with families, buskers, and even the occasional transvestite. The street comfortably shares some of the hottest bars in town with a few cozy hidden tea gardens. Take the time to peek into some of the unassuming cafes- the back patios are often secret treasures!

Kugulu Park is not large, but it\\\'s centrally located and a wonderful place for a brief respite from the noise of the city. The park features a pond with swans, which the park is named for, and is located just at the top of Tunali Hilmi Street. Surrounding the park are bookstores, cafes, and pubs, although you can pick up some snacks from street vendors in the park. Families with small children, retirees, and students all congregate here. A favorite spot for photographers!

Ankara hosts over 100,000 university students from all around Turkey, and Askabat Cadde (formerly 7th Street) is a midpoint between many of the campuses, making this district a favorite hangout for the young crowd. Less crowded than Kizilay and calmer than Tunali Hilmi, 7th Street is a place for a relaxing stroll on wide streets or shopping in trendy boutiques. Many of the cafes are geared toward socialization, offering nargile and board games on comfortable couches or bean bags.

For some nightlife, check out Cafe Bien just off Tunali Hilmi Street. This is a favorite hangout of expats, so it\'s a good place to run into some English speakers in the evening. Cafe Bien transforms from an unassuming cafe in the daylight to a wild, raucous party at night. The bar is well-stocked and the music is cranked up, although it\'s often so crowded that dancing is a challenge.

Ankara prides itself on being the most modern city in Turkey, but its architectural history dates back to the Roman days when Ancyra was the capital of the province of Galatia. A few remnants of this era remain, most notably the citadel, a walled fortress on the highest hill in the city. The quarter around the castle is worth a stroll, with restored Ottoman houses now boasting cafes and antique shops. Inside the citadel there\'s more shopping and, if you turn a corner, a slice of village life. Children run barefoot through the streets while housewives chase their chickens- you would never know you were in the center of a large city! Take a picture from the top, where you get a breathtaking 360 degree of the entire city. The castle is always open and free of charge.

A Roman temple of Augustus, later a Byzantine church, and now a mosque. You can literally walk through the history of Anatolia within a single structure at this site in the center of Ulus, from the still-standing Roman columns on one side to the active mosque on the other. The current mosque is built next to the tomb of a Sufi saint and attracts hordes of religious Turkish tourists. Next to the mosque is a string of souvenir shops with Islamic artwork and religious artifacts.

Just up the street from Ulus Square, a sunken Roman Road leads to the Column of Julian, built in 362 AD to honor the Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate as he passed through Ankara. The column is 15 meters high and stands in the middle of the road. For history buffs on the way to the Roman baths or the castle, this is worth stopping by.

Atakule, the funky tower visible from nearly everywhere in the city, was originally built in the 1980s by then-president Turgut Ozal, who found Ankara somewhat lacking in modern cool and wanted a structure to remedy that. One of the quirkiest museums you\'ll find anywhere is located directly opposite the citadel in Ulus. The building itself- an old caravanserai from 1522- is reason enough to check out this museum, but the eclectic collections are worth spending a few hours perusing. The Koc family\'s personal collection sprawls through the rooms, offering old cars, toys, walking sticks, typewriters, maritime equipment, and snippets of village life in Anatolia. The museum also has a shop and a restaurant in the courtyard with excellent manti (Turkish ravioli with yogurt sauce).

This historic Turkish bath doesn\'t look like much from the outside, but the marbled steam rooms of this hamam, which has been open since 1440 and is still used by locals, are more authentic than what the more touristic options in Antalya or Istanbul offer. Karacabey Hamam is located just opposite the clocktower in Hamamonu, close to Ulus or Kizilay. Bring a swimsuit and towel, and the staff will take care of the rest. You can provide your own soap or buy it there, although at 25 TL for a full service bath and massage, extra soap probably won\'t bust the wallet. The hamam has separate facilities for men and women and provides hair styling and nail care for an additional charge. The staff doesn\'t speak English, but they welcome foreigners and provide excellent service nonetheless.

Kizilay is the undisputed center of the city, and the trendiest spot for shopping, dining, and socializing. Crowded, narrow streets stay busy day and night. The covered bazaars and pasajes offer a variety of trinkets, clothes, jewelry, and handmade leather products, while the bookstores and cafes are full of students. Go with an empty stomach and fill up on street food, which is everywhere. Expect to find a wide range of food options, from the 5 TL doner/ayran combos geared toward students to fine dining at the top of the YKM department store tower.

If you thought you couldn\\\'t find a lively bar scene in conservative Turkey, think again. During the day, Sakarya Street is a central district of shops and cafes like any other. But at night it transforms to the center of nightlife in Ankara. Music and dance aficionados bar-hop to find pop hits, trance, Turkish classics, hard rock, metal, and more. Street vendors set up late at night to offer snacks like kofte (meatballs), durum (wraps), kokorec (lamb intestines), or iskembe (soup with lamb intestines). On weekends the party lasts until well after sunrise. Steer clear of the gypsy children who will try to scam or pickpocket you, but the street is relatively safe at all hours of the night.

The artsy crowd gathers at this cafe in Kizilay to discuss literature and politics around comfortable sofas and low coffee tables. But don\'t be fooled by the Euro glam decor- the food is thoroughly Turkish! The tea and coffee menu features espresso drinks and flavored teas, while the meals range from light snacks to full dinner entrees. Uphill from Tunali Hilmi, Segmenler is one of the best green spaces in central Ankara, with plenty of trees and secluded benches. Ambitious joggers appreciate the uphill gain of the trails, and sledders appreciate the steep hills in winter. An Ankara classic, the Ataturk Forest Farm, or AOC, was established by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and donated to the Turkish State in 1937. The expansive park features farms, restaurants, and a model of the house Ataturk was born in. Visitors can sample many of the foods produced organically onsite. Locals love the ice cream and dairy products, which can be purchased elsewhere in the city but taste best at the source. Or, if you are in the mood for imbibing, there is also a brewery on site. In 2014, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan caused some controversy by erecting a new 1000 room Presidential Palace on the grounds of the AOC. Check it out for yourself and see what all the fuss is about.

Although Kecioren, a suburb of Ankara, seems an unlikely place for a scenic cable car to take you high above the city, it\'s a surprisingly pleasant view. From one side, the entire Ankara metro area is visible, while the countryside sprawls out from the other. The ride is definitely not for anyone with a fear of heights, but it\'s definitely worth a visit if you can handle the car swinging. Adult tickets 5 TL, children 7-12 2.5 TL, children under 6 free.

However, now that the shopping mall is closed, the tower itself is actually quite an underwhelming sight. So once you\'ve stood at the base of the tower and wondered if it was worth the trek up the massive hill to get there, check out the botanical park in the valley just below the tower. Hotel Mithat is a budget hotel within walking distance of all the major sights in Ankara, minutes from either Ulus or Kizilay. The English-speaking staff and clean rooms consistently receive rave reviews from travelers who are looking for a step up from a hostel, but don\'t have the budget for a big-name hotel.

Efes has long been THE domestic beer of Turkey, but a few years ago Bomonti emerged on the scene, pulling in a market share with its malt flavor. In fact, Bomonti became so popular that Efes countered with its own malt beer! While this local brew is available virtually anywhere, it is best enjoyed at the Brasserie near Tunus Street with friends. Just make sure to get there early or prepare to wait for a table- this place is always hopping with a lively, young crowd.

This cafe looks so unassuming, on the corner in a quiet residential neighborhood, up the hill from the trendier areas of town. But peek in the window and you\'ll see a crew of Turkish aunties hard at work rolling and cutting dough for manti (a Turkish ravioli served with yogurt sauce). The decor is simplistic, but the food- oh, the food. Try anything they recommend- the quality and price of the traditional home-style foods at Sedir is unmatched. The staff is friendly and prompt, and while nobody speaks English, they are always delighted to have foreign visitors and take extra care to make sure guests are satisfied.

It\'s quite a thrill to buy simit (a breakfast bread) from a red cart or a traveling vendor with a stack of simit balanced on his head. But to see the limits to which simit can be taken, you must stop by a Simit Sarayi. This chain can be found all over town, and besides the basic simit and pogaca, they have simit sandwiches, pide, breads with every savory and sweet flavor you could want. Feel free to go in and browse the display cases, but be warned that you probably won\'t be walking out empty-handed!
